On de 1st of January 1502, the Portuguese navigators saw the Guanabara Bay. Believing that was the bar of a great river, they called it "Rio de Janeiro", originating the name of the city.
In 1763 Rio de Janeiro became Capital of Brasil, title until 1960, when Brasília, the present Capital of Brasil was inaugurated.
Today, the Sate of Rio de Janeiro is after São Paulo, the second biggest industrial pole of Brasil, and is amongst the first in tourism, besides being the main cultural centre of the countryand the most important politic centre.
With a population of more than 6 million inhabitants (Cariocas) as the inhabitants of this city are called, they are a nice beautiful and very happy people and they celebrate the most famous Carnival of the World.
Situated in the middle of a privilege view by nature, between the sea and the mountains, Rio de Janeiro is one of the most beautiful cities in the World, Worthing the title of Marvellous City.
